G.D. Vajra, Dolcetto d'Alba 2021
G.D. Vajra has long been one of the finest producers in Piedmont, northern Italy and is a truly family operation with attention to detail and love on show in all their wines. So beloved is G.D Vajra that my wife and I spent the morning there the day after getting engaged, tasting with Francseca Vajra, and that’s where we first encountered this gorgeous Dolcetto d’Alba.
At just £18 a bottle, this is magnificent grape juice from a famous winemaking family, with a heady perfume of black cherry, balsamic, wild strawberry, blood orange, rosehip, white pepper and flecks of violet.
On the palate it is beguiling, with a sensuous mouthfeel and soft tannins. This is such an elegant wine and the finish lasts for several minutes. Whether as a treat on a weeknight or as the centrepiece to a dinner party, this is a Dolcetto you just have to try.
