Domaine La Croix Gratiot, Picpoul de Pinet 2022

from £14.00

Writing in The Time, Jane MacQuitty picked this as one of her six top Picpoul, writing, “The Ricome family’s exotic, herby, richly fruited wine is one of the finest picpouls, so dive in”.

Easy, sea-breezy Picpoul de Pinet is having a moment. So rip-roaringly popular is this crisp, refreshing, lemon-twist, southern French white that the UK imports a third of its entire production. Not bad for a grape that none of us had heard of a decade or so ago!

Most offerings you see in the supermarkets are re-packaged wines that come from one of two or three cooperatives, but this glorious Picpoul comes from single-vineyard grower, giving the wine extra depth and nuance that a supermarket £12 bottle can’t match.

The name Pique-poul translates literally as "stings the lip", and is a reference to the grape's mouthwateringly high acidity, which makes it perfect for long summer days, barbecues and the perfect accompaniment to seafood and salads. In our house there is always a bottle of Domaine La Croix Gratiot Picpoul in the fridge - try for yourself!
