Jadot’s Beaune 1er Cru Célébration 2020 represents a sort of Harlem Globetrotter’s of Burgundy, or what Manchester City FC would likely do if they turned their hand from football to viticulture: a blend of seventeen sought after Premier Cru plots from one of the great vintages, blended together in 135 individual open vats for each vineyard parcel and aged in oak for 18 months. I was fortunate to attend a launch tasting yesterday where Louis Jadot talked about this cuvée as their attempt to make a 'Super Premier Cru'.
This brilliant wine which was a joy to taste represents the best value that red Burgundy can offer. The wines have finesse & elegance, will age beautifully for decades, and offer incredible value, particularly in the context of current, nosebleed-inducing Burgundy pricing. Beaune Premier Cru Célébration is only made in the very best red Beaune vintages, first in 2009, followed by vintages 2012, 2015, 2018 and now the 2020, all of which are a testament to the quality and value that Beaune represents.
William Kelley, writing for The Wine Advocate, awarded the wine 92 points, noting “There are some 3,500 cases of the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless wine evocative of smoky berries, spices and licorice, framed by creamy new oak. More polished and elegant than the muscular 2018, the last rendition of this bottling (which blends more than a dozen of Beaune's premiers crus), it will offer a broad drinking window.”
