Baron de Badasserie, Picpoul de Pinet 2023
Easy, sea-breezy Picpoul de Pinet is having a moment. So rip-roaringly popular is this crisp, refreshing, lemon-twist, southern French white that the UK imports a third of its entire production. Not bad for a grape that none of us had heard of a decade or so ago!
Most offerings you see in the supermarkets are re-packaged wines that come from one of two or three cooperatives, but this glorious Picpoul comes from single-vineyard grower, giving the wine extra depth and nuance that a supermarket £13.50 bottle can’t match.
The name Pique-poul translates literally as "stings the lip", and is a reference to the grape's mouthwateringly high acidity, which makes it perfect for long summer days, barbecues and the perfect accompaniment to seafood and salads. In our house there is always a bottle of Picpoul in the fridge - try it for yourself, it is the perfect summer white!
