The Judgement of London · Vintage Champagne v English Sparkling Wine - Thursday 29 October

from £250.00
Limit 3 per order
Ticket type:

Twenty seats. Twelve exceptional wines. One verdict. Six of the greatest Champagnes ever made meet England's finest, vintage for vintage, served blind. A London first.

In 1976, Steven Spurrier pitted France's finest wines against unknown Californians in a blind tasting that shook the wine world. In the 50th anniversary year of the Judgement of Paris, Clos Fine Wine stages the rematch on home soil, in the iconic auction room of Stanley Gibbons on the Strand, opposite the Savoy Hotel.

Six legendary Champagne houses face six of England's leading estates, vintage for vintage, from 2018 back to 2009. Every wine is poured blind, and every guest is a judge.

An unprecedented line-up

  • 2018 · Dom Pérignon v Gusbourne Blanc de Noirs

  • 2016 · Louis Roederer Cristal v Gusbourne Fifty One Degrees North

  • 2014 · Bollinger La Grande Année v Nyetimber 1086

  • 2012 · Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé v Hoffmann & Rathbone Rosé Reserve

  • 2010 · Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs v Breaky Bottom Cuvée Reynolds Stone

  • 2009 · Philipponnat Clos des Goisses v Wiston Estate Blanc de Blancs Library Release

Tasting Dom Pérignon, Cristal, Bollinger, Comtes de Champagne, Dom Ruinart and Clos des Goisses side by side is a rare opportunity even for seasoned collectors. Here, each one must prove itself blind against England's best.

How the evening works

The evening runs as six blind head-to-head flights. You score every wine out of 20. At the close we reveal each flight's winner, then the definitive ranking of all twelve wines, just as in Paris in 1976. We begin with a welcome glass of Bride Valley 2018, from the Dorset vineyard founded by Steven Spurrier himself.

Exceptional value

It would cost around £1,700 to buy a bottle of each of these wines to try at home. At the Judgement of London you taste all twelve, blind.

London's leading merchants charge around £300 for Champagne masterclasses, often to larger rooms. Here you join a table of just 20, for £250, or £450 for two.

Your ticket includes

  • Welcome glasses of Bride Valley 2018

  • Twelve vintage wines, tasted blind

  • Light bites throughout

  • Tasting booklet and scorecard

  • The final reveal and rankings
